Bring to boil 2 c water and 1/2 c salt.Remove from heat and add 2 Tbsp powdered alum, 1/4 c salad oil, and 2 1/4 c flour. Turn onto floured board and knead in food coloring. Dough is hot. Store in air tight container. (I think in the fridge if you are keeping it very long)
1 c flour 1/2 c salt 2 tsp cream of tartar 1 c water
Mix all together with electric beater---no lumps. Add 2 Tbsp boiling water and 1 tsp food coloring to form a ball in the pan. Knead. Store in airtight container.

Simmer and stir for 2 minutes Remove from stove and add 1/4 c water mixed with 1/2 c cornstarch. Sitr quickly and hard. Roll and cut with cookie cutter or make jewelry. Paint with nail polish or tempera paint (I would imagine after it dries?)
